Tasting Notes Probably the best whisky in the world to take into the sauna… This seriously striking Malt Rye Whisky was lovingly handcrafted at the Kyrö Distillery in Isokyrö Finland. Made using 100% malted Finnish rye it's double pot distilled and matured in a mix of new American oak and ex-Bourbon barrels. What emerges is an intensely peppery whisky with notes of vanilla caramel rye bread honey marmalade mocha sultanas dried apricots dark chocolate brown sugar toasted oak and wild berries. The experience is more warming and enlivening than being beaten with birch branches in the sauna. OK we suppose we had better explain why we keep going on about this famous Finnish pastime… The idea for Kyrö was conceived in a sauna by a group of friends discussing their mutual love of rye whiskey. The Finns love rye so it made perfect sense to create a distillery that utilised something that features so prominently in the national cuisine. They set up shop in a repurposed dairy and to say the stills only began running in 2014 it's incredible what they've achieved in such a short time.
