This is the thick cake board, measuring approx. 0.5 inches thick, commonly referred to in the cake decorating industry as a drum board. They are a more heavy duty board than regular 3mm or 4mm thick ones, and are designed to be able to carry heavier cakes, such as fruit cakes, and multi tiered wedding cakes. Drum boards that are two inches bigger than the largest tier are generally used. For example, if you are baking a 12 inch cake, you will need a 14 inch drum board.
